West Virginia Sports Betting & iGaming Numbers

West Virginia sportsbooks and online casinos both reported a month-over-month increase in revenue during October. Online sports betting operators reported a total handle of $42.1 million and total revenue of $5.06 million, while online casinos brought in $9.4 million in revenue, with a total handle of $317 million. 

October’s sports betting and online casino numbers represent October 2nd – 29th. West Virginia reports their numbers weekly instead of monthly, leading to various date ranges. September dates spanned from September 4th to October 1st. Both September and October’s numbers cover 28 calendar days. 

Sports betting overview

Sports betting operators in the state reported an increase in their total handle from September to October. West Virginia players wagered a total of $51.1 million in West Virginia, a 9% increase from the $46.9 wagered in September. Online sports wagering made up $42.1 million of the total wagering in the state, a 13.2% increase from September. 

Both online sports wagering and retail sports wagering experienced a decrease year over year. The total sports betting handle of $51.1 million for October 2022 was a decrease of 17.1% from October 2021, when state operators handled a total of $61.7 million.

While online sports betting brought in $42.1 million, a 13.2% increase from September, it was still an 11.9% decrease compared to October 2021, when operators handled a total of $47.77 million.

Revenue for online sports wagering was $6.97 million, up 27.3% month-over-month and 89.9% from October 2021. 

The majority of sports wagers placed in West Virginia were online. Online sports betting made up 82.3% of the month’s total handle. Retail sports betting accounted for $9,034,025 of the total $51,118,726 wagered during October.

Online slot, roulette, and table game operators reported a combined handle of $317.05 million for October. The figure represents a 12.4% increase from September’s total handle of $282.17 million. 

Online casino revenue was down month-over-month, with state operators bringing in just $9.4 million, an 8.3% decrease from September. During October, the state’s online casino operators brought in $430,473 in state taxes. Total tax revenue from iGaming was down 27.3% compared to September’s tax revenue of $592,459.
