Not to be left behind, Iowa joined the increasing number of states to legalize sports betting in 2019, just in time for football season. Officially passed in May of 2019, the first sportsbooks were up and running on August 15th of that year. In the weeks that followed, 13 legal sportsbooks opened up across the state, and five more were in business by October.

As of January 1, 2021, the original in-person registration requirement included in the bill has been lifted, allowing players to register online, make their deposit, and start betting from anywhere online.
