Online Sports Betting History

New Jersey State Senator Raymond Lesniak first introduced sports betting legislation back in 2009, but was roadblocked by the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Amendment (PASPA) of 1992, which prohibited sports betting in all except four states. In 2018, the Supreme Court deemed PASPA unconstitutional, and just a few weeks after the verdict, Governor Phil Murphy signed the sports betting bill into law on June 11th, 2018.

Since then, the industry has grown exponentially across the state. From retail to racetrack, land-based to online, New Jersey has a sportsbook for every type of bettor. Because of this, still growing, explosion of sports betting options, experts are projecting more annual revenue to be generated by sports betting in New Jersey than any other state in the U.S, including Nevada.
