Online Sports Betting History

After a delay in legislation due to the COVID-19 pandemic, during which Governor Ralph Northam requested amendments to the bill, sports betting became legal in the state of Virginia on July 1, 2020.

A little over 6 months later, FanDuel became the first online sportsbook in Virginia on January 21, 2021. A few days later, they were joined by other leading online sportsbooks DraftKings, BetRivers, and BetMGM.

Though no brick and mortar casinos exist in Virginia yet, they are in the pipeline, with four cities across the state voting for new gaming facilities on the November 2020 ballot. Though these physical sites won’t open until 2022 or later, they will provide new and exciting opportunities for players, as each is allowed one online sports betting partner, and could eventually have a retail sportsbook.
